TRANCE: A Social Network App for Dancers

Funkanometry SF director Emerson Aquino first showed me this dance video app a few weeks ago and it was really interesting how it worked. It’s called Trance. Check out our interview with Marwa Muhammad, one of the producers of Trance.

What is Trance?
Trance is a social network for dance. It is a place to watch, record and share beautiful dance videos.

How does it work?
Anyone can record a dance up to 1 minute long through the app. It automatically cancels all background noise, so all the videos have perfect audio quality. You can also watch as many performances as you want, follow dancers you like, and give hearts to dances you love. The top 9 dances are featured every day, which changes daily, giving new dances and dancers a chance to be recognized.

Can we use any song we want to?
You can dance to songs that are on your phone.

Does it cost the user anything?
It is completely free.

Are you a dancer as well? What are your goals with this app?
Yes, I am! I am not a professional dancer, but I have been dancing since I was 9. Our goal is to bring dance to the forefront. We have built Trance to inspire and bring people together through dance.

What is the story of how you came up with the app idea?
One of my biggest passions in life is dance. When I first met one of my co-founders, Harper LaFave in graduate school, we bonded over our love for dance. After graduation, building something for dance seemed to be the only logical thing to do! We spent a month talking with dancers, dance show enthusiasts, and people that associated with the word ‘dance’ in some form, and one problem kept surfacing. There was no place for dancers to come together and share through dance. Dance is how we communicate with our body in a language we all understand. It’s innately social, yet there is no easy way to spread dance, so we created Trance.

What platform is Trance compatible with?
This is a mobile app for iPhones only at the moment, although dances you share are viewable by everyone on the web whether they are on their phone or computer! Recording and browsing through dances can be done through the app only. Your dances recorded through Trance also save straight to your camera roll so you can share it on other social networks too.

When does it come out and where can we get it?!
It comes out on Thursday, April 10th to the App Store in USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Just search “Trance – Social Dancefloor” on your iPhone or click on www.tranceapp.com/download and you will be able to download it!
