In spirit of The GroovMekanex’s 18th Yr Anniversary weekend, one of our original members from the East Coast will be here in the Bay for some very special workshops, on top of being a guest judge for our Locking Battle at the anniversary party!

Locking & House Workshops w/ Esperonto

Sunday Nov 5th

@ City Dance Annex
1420 Harrison St. SF

$20 for 1 class
$30 for both

Locking / 2-3:30pm

This workshop will focus on catching frames while grooving to the music. Dancers will also learn short combinations while drilling basic foundation. Funk is the only way to go!

House / 3:30-5pm

This workshop will focus on footwork patterns and ways to groove with the music. The first half will drill technique and the second half will focus on choreography and transitions from moves. Experience the music, dance and culture of House as we continue to bring positive vibes.

About:

Esperonto is recognized as one of the original House Dancers from Baltimore, and is well-versed in many dance styles, including House, Hip-Hop, Locking and Punking/Waacking. He is the founder and director of Bmore Houseful, which is a dance company dedicated to House dance culture.

Over the past ten years, Esperonto has been one of the top Urban Dance instructors in the DMV. He has taught workshops and classes for youth at City Dance, American Dance Institute, Dance Institute of Washington, Washington International School and Joy of Motion Dance Center. Esperonto was the creator and director of the dance curriculum H.Y.P.E., Joy of Motion’s youth urban dance program, where he also directed the youngest youth company RhythMix for 4 years. He was the Director of Future Shock Freestyle Team in D.C. and taught and choreographed for the #1 US Junior Competitive Ice Skating Team, Wheaton Ice Skating Academy.

He was adjunct faculty at Community College of Baltimore County and Howard Community College where he implemented and taught the first lecture course on Hip-Hop culture. Esperonto is currently teaching the first credited Urban Dance course at American University.

Esperonto was mentored by the legendary Fluky Luke and the late Fred “ReRun” Berry of the famed group “The Lockers”. He became a member of GroovMekanex in the late 90’s, which is the first Locking crew in the DMV area. Esperonto has danced with GroovMekanex as special guest performers for the internationally recognized Hip-Hop dance company Rennie Harris Pure Movement.

Esperonto was the co-recipient of the 2007 Kennedy Center Millennium Stage Imagine Choreographer Award for his House Dance Choreography. He was a premiere performer and master class instructor at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall at ArtScape, Culture Shock DC, Edgeworks Dance Theater, Lesole’s Dance Project, The White House Easter Egg Roll, Georgetown University, Portland University, Earth Week on the National Mall, Dance Place,The Kennedy Center Millennium Stage,The Hippodrome and Theater Project.

His credibility in the dance scene also led him to open for acclaimed House and Hip-Hop artists such as Barbara Tucker, CeCe Penniston, Robin S., Funk Master Flex, Busta, Rhymes, KRS1, Loon, K-Solo, Mix Master Mike and Dirty Vegas.
